Role models. We all have at least one. It may be a family member, neighbor, teacher, coach or someone who has already achieved a goal that we one day aspire to accomplish also. A role model is simply someone who inspires us to be the best version of ourselves.
This past week I was lucky enough to randomly run into a few very influential people in my life. They believed in me and encouraged me to keep working hard. They saw potential in me even before I knew that I had any, and even though a few of them only touched my life briefly they left a lifelong impression. With all my heart, I know that I would not be on the path I am now if it were not for their influences.
My first swim coach was one of the kindest most patient men I have ever met, I thank him for helping me find my love of the water. It was on the Dolphins Swim Team back in 5th grade that an incredible journey began. My high school swim coach I give credit to for making me mentally tough. He knew how hard you had to work to be great, it took determination, focus, and sacrifice. I am so thankful for the four years I spent swimming with him. Even though there were days I was furious at him for making me push through my “I can’t do it’s” he knew that I could and he never gave up on me. My shortest coach/athlete relationship, and sure to be the longest is with my current coach, Trista Francis, from the moment that I started training with her, I knew that things were going to start happening. I work as hard for her as she does for me and I am so grateful to have her in my life. Then there were all the wonderful teachers I have had, a few in junior high, high school and at the University of Arizona. When you really sit down and think about it, how do you go about thanking all the people who have shaped you, inspired you, pushed you to be great.
As for role models, no list of mine would be complete without mentioning the most important person in my life. My mommy. Yes, I said mommy, that’s what I’ve called her ever since I could talk and that’s who she is. She’s my: teacher, cheer leader, best friend, fashion consultant, therapist, and nurse. Yep, I’m a lucky girl.
Thank you to all those who believe in me, encourage me, and keep pushing me towards my dreams.
